Hiring Procedures

To Post an Opening and Receive Resumes

  • If you already have a username and password, enter them into the Login box. If you have forgotten your password, utilize the "forgot your password" button
  • If you do not yet have a username or password, click on: "Request a Username" on the employment home page, to request one.

  • Complete the "Submit or update your company profile" form and "Submit or review your openings" form. This will allow you to specify, with the aid of drop down menus, your choice of engineering major, computer skills, experience required, etc. along with a description of your opening. Be as specific and descriptive as possible, and remember, the position should require technical ability and challenge the engineering student.
  • Students registered in the program will see this posting, and those who are qualified and interested will directly respond to you.

  • If you would like, once you have posted your position, you can view resumes of engineering students registered with the programs based on your requirements. Feel free to directly contact those students in whom you have interest. These students may not have had a chance to view your posting, in which case, please describe your company and position to them.
  • While completing the search of our database be aware of whether you choose "Find records with ANY of the selected criteria" or "Find records with ALL the selected criteria". This choice will affect the volume of resumes you receive.

You may wish to begin by searching for your "ideal" candidate, answering as many of the keywords from the pull down menus as you wish. If you receive an insufficient number of resumes, eliminate some less important criteria for your position and you will receive more resumes.

  • Remember that the work you require the engineering student to perform should be technical in nature and should be challenging. Each student will be earning credit for their work with you, therefore, the work must be credit-worthy.

Interview Procedure

  • Contact students via phone or email from our system.
  • Interview the candidates at your site, at UB, or over the phone. Please contact us if you need to make arrangements to interview on the university campus.
  • Please keep Dean Millar aware of the students you interview and which students will receive offers.

Job Offer Procedure

  • Most of the employers taking advantage of the Engineering Student Work Experience Program have offered the students   $10 - $20 per hour. Naturally, you will offer a salary within your company's guidelines.
  • Please keep us aware of which students you plan to offer positions and if they have accepted. We wish to keep our database of students free of those who have already accepted a position.

Other Information

  • Housing: Some of our employers who offer positions in locations other than the hometowns of their student employees have provided some form of housing assistance.
  • Orientation: At the beginning of the student’s assignment, work objectives should be set so that the student will be able to proceed independently to create value for you on a project. Clarifying your expectations and providing general information about your organization and goals will allow the student employee to produce better results, as noted in our success stories.
  • Supervision: At least limited supervision will be appropriate for you to ensure that you are obtaining full advantage of your student employees’ abilities to contribute.
  • Evaluation: A brief evaluation form will be completed at the end of the work period regarding your student employees’ performance. Naturally, students will be motivated to perform well in order to earn a positive evaluation.
