Details of Co-op Program
Two Credits per semester
Spring, Summer and/or Fall

Course Highlights:

  • Apply SEAS coursework and skills to achieve valuable technical employment project results.
  • Gain credit-worthy, paid (past average $10-$20/hour), work experience.
  • Maintain full-time student status with the University.
  • Access to Internet Job Search System (you will need to fill out last page of current programs guide for internet access, which is available in 412 Bonner Hall) for posting resumes and searching for jobs. Available to UB engineering and applied sciences students exclusively.

Course Requirements:
1. Obtain Position
- Students may join the Co-op Program once they have obtained technical, full-time employment. Emphasis must be on practical application of engineering coursework (contain engineering and/or applied science work experience).

2. Registration - Students register by completing Participating Co-op Data Sheet, available by contacting the SEAS External Affairs Office, 412 Bonner Hall, intern@eng.buffalo.edu, 716-645-2768. Registration

International students must contact the SEAS External Affairs office, 412 Bonner, intern@eng.buffalo.edu, 716-645-2768 to obtain a letter requesting CPT approval before they can be considered for co-op employment. To do this, student must have a company letter stating: job offer, company name and address, company supervisor's name and title, beginning and ending dates,and a brief statement of job duties.

3. Mandatory Reports

A. Written and Oral Report - Prepare and present a written and an oral project report at conclusion of each industrial work experience period, i.e., semester. The oral presentation is made to participating company management, with written report submitted to company supervisor and departmental Co-op faculty advisor (assigned at time of registration). In addition, an oral project report is made to Co-op class/faculty advisor.

B. Additional Required Reports - Submission of the following required forms:
  • Work assignment objectives and expectations to faculty adviser - at beginning of semester
  • Performance evaluation of student by company supervisor - at end of semester
  • Evaluation of Co-op program by student - at end of semester
  • Student project information sheet for SPIR - at end of semester
  • Employer satisfaction of program survey - at end of semester

4. Grading - Students will receive a letter grade (A-F) from their faculty advisors based on the following guidelines:

40% Job performance: including appraisal from
 company supervisor
25% Project written report graded by faculty advisor
15% Oral report presentation graded by faculty advisor
20% Professionalism: communication with faculty advisor,
including timely submission of required forms as listed
above graded by faculty advisor
